A group of seven accused individuals of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
