The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
